I got a sneak-peek at this book as a beta reader and loved it! I highly recommend checking this one out.
I could not put this book down once I started reading. I love the combo of fantasy and murder mystery wrapped up in this brilliant new fantasy world.
Plot
I devoured this book. The pacing was flawless, keeping me engaged from start to finish. The story follows Rill, a prisoner; Sabella, a constable; and Keeva, a privileged lady, whose lives intertwine after they witness a gruesome murder.
With their unique skills, they are the only ones capable of uncovering the truth, complicated by the fact that the murder was witnessed under the influence of highly illegal magic. Together, they must conceal how they came to witness the crime and get to the bottom of the mystery before more bodies start piling up.
Characters
The characters were brilliant, and I loved the dynamic between the three main women. Coming from such different backgrounds, they start out with a lot of mistrust and dislike for each other. It was great to see how their relationships developed as they worked together and slowly built up to respect and then friendship.
Keeva and Sabina were my top two favorite characters, with Rill coming in as a close third. Keeva is a well-rounded rich girl character, which is impressive considering how privileged she is. She comes off as proactive and aware of her privilege, which made her really likable.
Setting and World Building
The world building and magic were so good! And the setting was right up my alley, with Regency/ gaslamp fantasy vibes. There is no info dumping and the world felt fresh and unique and is well explained in sprinkles of information that are easy to digest as you go.
I love that there are pegasi and I really enjoyed that there are many types of magic which makes you feel like there is more to come in later books.
The descriptions were vivid, giving me a clear image of all the places. My favorite was the manor house, but the forest and her cottage at the beginning really drew me into the world.
The guard barracks had a cozy kitchen with a great community feel, and the library was wonderfully creepy and mysterious, perfect for the manor house. I want to know more about all those artifacts and the stories behind them.
Summary
If you're into fantasy mixed with a good old-fashioned murder mystery, this book is a must-read! I can't wait to delve deeper into this world in future books.
