A Bit About Airin Efferin

Where do you live?

I currently live in Indonesia, but I grew up in the States and also spent some younger years in Taiwan.

Author Bio

I’ve always journaled since a child, but I started writing more seriously in 2019 when my first husband died. In 2020 when the pandemic hit, I found I had a lot more time on my hands to explore my writing. Nisha was written in March 2020 when Indonesia went into lockdown. Since then, I’ve just kept continuing on that path!

Now lets get into the interview . . .

Interview with Author Airin Efferin

1. What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

Reading (lol), playing with my new puppy, scuba diving, and playing the piano.

2. What authors, books, TV shows, movies, or fandoms are your favourites?

Oh gosh! My favorite author of all time is Diana Wynne Jones (Howl’s moving Castle). I think I’ve read almost all of her books. Recently I’m quite taken with Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse as well, and also Marissa Meyer’s The Lunar Chronicles.

3. Do you have pets, and do they help or hinder your writing?

YES! A black chow-chow puppy. If he hinders with the writing, it’s the best kind of hindrance :D

4. What comes first for you— plot, characters, or world building- and why?

Characters. If I don’t feel a connection to the characters, then I lose motivation to keep writing about them.

5. What is your writing process like? Are you more of a plotter or a pantser?

I have to say I’m a pantser, although I’ve recently come to value plotting ahead. I still do listen to my gut instinct when the writing process is happening though.

6. What’s your writing software of choice?

Word and Grammarly.

7. Where do you like to write?

In bed!

8. What is your most productive time of day for writing?

Early morning. Like before the world wakes up.

9. What is the most valuable piece of advice you’ve been given about writing?

To read and read and read a lot, in a lot of different genres by varied authors.

10. What are your favourite forms of fan appreciation (eg book reviews, fan art, fanfiction, letters to you, bookstagram photos, etc)?

I LOVE THEM ALL

11. Would you share something about yourself that your readers might not know (yet)?

When I get a new idea, I just hack away at it for a couple thousand words to see if there is any chemistry with the characters. Often I end up putting it aside because it’s lacking the magical spark. The drafts I continue with are the ones that survive that first beginning process with the spark intact, or on rare times, burning brighter.

My Review of Nisha

Nisha is a whimsical coming of age adventure tale that feels like a classic fairytale. I enjoyed this novella and breezed through the whole book in a few short sittings. I particularly enjoyed the world building, magic and fantasy elements. You get a real feel for a magical Kingdom, and I found the magic to be interesting and unique.
It reads more like middle grade than young adult, as the writing is quite simple and has a lot of narration. But I really enjoyed this style and it is well written.
I would recommended Nisha to anyone wanting a quick read to escape to a magical fantasy Kingdom.
